The Dominican Republic is the most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean. It is also a busy regional travel hub with flights from most major cities worldwide. There are over twenty Dominican Republic airports, and visitors can be assured of comfort, safety, and top-notch management in the arrival and departure experience, especially at international airports.

Busiest Airports in the Dominican Republic

Most visitors to the Dominican Republic arrive via one of the country’s seven international airports. Below is a ranking of these international Dominican Republic airports based on 2021 passenger traffic figures sourced from the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic:

  1. Punta Cana International Airport in Punta Cana (2,244,847 passengers),
  2. Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo (1,948,363 passengers),
  3. Cibao International Airport in Santiago de los Caballeros (957,117 passengers),
  4. Gregorio Luperon International Airport in Puerto Plata (198,209 passengers),
  5. La Romana International Airport in La Romana (182,775 passengers),
  6. La Isabela International Airport in Santo Domingo (45,608 passengers) and
  7. Samaná El Catey International Airport in Samaná (13,205 passengers).

In total, 5,590,124 passengers arrived in the Dominican Republic via one of these major airports in 2021. However, it should be noted that these figures are still down from 2019 when 7,126,857 passengers entered the Dominican Republic via these seven international airports.

The busiest Punta Cana International is privately owned and operated by Corporación Aeroportuaria del Este, S.A. (CAE), with direct flights from 28 countries / 98 cities via 81 different airlines. Most of the other airports are managed by Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) under a concession contract granted by the State until 2030.
