Caution advised for swimming. Water quality usually suitable for swimming, but young children, elderly or those with compromised health may be at increased risk.

Due to the melting of part of the ice of the antartic continent on the south hemisphere´s summer, from December to March, strong currents bring to the coast of Rio de Janeiro cold temperatures and so the water temperature gets usually much lower than the ground´s / atmosphere´s.

Strong northeasterly winds that blow along the coast for much of the year—especially in the spring and summer—push warm surface waters away from the shore. This allows cool waters from deeper in the ocean to rise to the surface.
