What’s The Best Ham For This Recipe?

There are a few reasons I like to use a bone-in ham instead of a boneless ham for this recipe:

  • The bone helps keep the ham tender and juicy. I also use a bone-in ham for my Brown Sugar Mustard Baked Ham.
  • A spiral cut ham with the bone in makes serving easy.
  • I save the bone and any leftover ham for Slow Cooker Ham, White Bean Soup, or Ham And Cheese Strata casserole.

How Do You Make A Honey Baked Ham?

This show-stopper recipe is uncomplicated and relatively simple to make.

  1. Heat the oven and move the oven rack to the lower third of the oven. Prep the roasting dish by lining it with aluminum foil. Take the ham out of the packaging and toss out the glaze packet. Place the ham and water in the roasting dish. Stir the melted butter, honey, and Dijon mustard together and drizzle over the ham and between the slices.
  2. Flip the ham to cut side down in the roasting pan and cover with foil. Bake for 13 minutes per pound, or until a meat thermometer reads 140 degrees when inserted into the thickest part of the ham.
  3. Make the sugar coating by mixing the sugar and spices. Remove the foil from the ham and turn it on its side. Sprinkle half of the sugar mixture over the ham. Set the oven to broil and place in ham in the oven until the sugar has caramelized.
  4. Add the remaining sugar mixture and 3 to 4 tablespoons of the ham juices from the pan to a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook until thick. Brush or pour the glaze over the ham. Place back under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes until the edges are crispy, and the glaze is a dark golden brown.
  5. Remove from the oven and let the ham rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Helpful Tips

  • Add a ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves and allspice to add more warm spice flavor.
  • If you are unsure how to use a broiler, you can use a hand-held blow torch to caramelize the sugar coating and the glaze on the ham.
  • Spiral hams make serving easy. After removing the slices, use a sharp knife to cut any other ham chucks off the bone to use in soups, salads, and casseroles.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Leftover ham can be stored in the freezer in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to three months.

I’m anxious to try this but I’m not understanding the instructions ie why place ham on side to apply the sugar mixture? Is it supposed to go into the slices? I assume you apply to both sides so I’m wondering why not drizzle it over the top, broil, apply the thickened sugar sauce, and broil again?
Sorry if I’m making this too difficult 🙄

Does Honey Baked Ham cook the ham? ›

The Honey Baked Hams® are fully cooked and ready to enjoy. Take the meat out of the refrigerator to stand for at least 30 min before serving. Refrigerate unused portions immediately. We recommend that you do not heat Honey Baked Hams® - they are made to enjoy right from the refrigerator.

Do you put the glaze on a ham before you cook it or after you cook it? ›

The glaze should not be applied until the final hour to 30 minutes, in order to avoid burning the sugars. What you're going to do with the glaze ingredients is just combine most of them into a paste, and then apply it to the ham. After that, the heat in your oven will take care of everything.

Why put cloves in ham? ›

By studding the ham with beautifully scented Whole Cloves you create a wonderful Christmasy aroma and flavour that permeates the ham gently through the cooking process. It also looks very effective once the ham is cooked!

Why are HoneyBaked hams so good? ›

After curing, our hams spend up to 24 hours smoking—at least twice as long as the industry standard—over a select blend of hardwood chips. The long smoking process gives Honey Baked Ham its rich, smoky flavor our customers love.

Is Honey Baked Ham worth the price? ›

No. Honey Baked is good, but you can do better for 25% of the price. Go to the grocery store and get a Cook's brand ham. Make sure it's Cook's—other brands I've tried are too salty.

Why not heat Honey Baked Ham? ›

HoneyBaked Ham® and Turkey Breasts are best served directly from the refrigerator – simply thaw and they're ready for the table. If you prefer your meat warmed, gently heat on low heat, only by the slice, not heating the entire ham or turkey breast. Heating may cause the meat to dry out and lose flavor.

What happens if I don't pick up my Honey Baked Ham? ›

If you're unable to pick up your order on the scheduled date, a HoneyBaked® associate may call or email you to see if we can hold your order for another pickup date.

Is Honey Baked Ham processed meat? ›

Yep. “Processed meat” is any meat that's preserved by salting, smoking or curing, or by adding chemical preservatives. That means sausage, bacon, cold cuts like pastrami and salami, hot dogs and, yes, ham. Why does it matter whether or not ham counts as processed meat?

Is Honey Baked Ham cured or uncured? ›

Each Honey Baked Ham is cured for up to 24 hours using a signature process that enhances the flavor of the meat. Because we don't add any extra water or juices, our hams weigh the same going into the curing process as they do coming out.

How do you keep Honey Baked Ham moist? ›

Keep the Honey Baked Ham in its original foil wrapper or remove the wrapper and wrap with your own foil to keep it from drying out. Maintain the oven temperature at about 275°F to 300°F. A general time guide is to heat for 10 minutes for every pound of ham.

What is in the glaze packet that comes with ham? ›

What is the white stuff on honey ham? ›

Some cuts expose a few white spots with a limestone-like consistency, which are the result of prolonged curing. These show that the ham is of the highest quality. Technically they are crystals of an amino acid called tyrosine.

Are honey baked hams already glazed? ›

It is only when the ham gets to your local HoneyBaked store that a special machine thin-slices the tender meat in a spiral fashion around the bone. Then, one at a time, each ham is then coated with the glaze—a blend that is similar to what might be used to make pumpkin pie.

What is glazed ham made of? ›

The glaze I went for is a combination of butter, brown sugar, honey, Dijon mustard (adding a nice tang to the ham) and crushed garlic cloves. From here you can add in spices like the traditional ground cinnamon and ground cloves, or leave them out.
