Today I wanted to share this M&M Christmas Cookie Mix In a Jar gift idea. It is super easy to put together and the best part is that you probably have most if not all of the supplies in your kitchen already!

Every year, I face the dilemma of trying to figure out Christmas gifts for people that I don’t know that well but want to give a little something to. Maybe it’s a coworker, a teacher or a distant relative.

It’s also really nice to have something on hand when someone unexpectedly gives you a present. Having some easy DIY gifts ready to go can help you avoid an awkward “oh but I didn’t get you anything” situation.

This year I decided to put together a bunch of M&M Cookie Mix in a jar kits. They are very easy to put together and you probably have most of the ingredients already in your kitchen cabinets.

I also just have to add that these make really good cookies. I made not one but two batches earlier this week with the intention of photographing them for this post… but my husband got to them first!

At the bottom of this post you’ll find the free printable recipe tag that goes along with it.

Feel free to download and print as many recipe tags as you would like. However, please do not edit or sell the tags or the completed jars. This gift idea was intended for personal use only.

How long does cookie mix in a jar last?

If the ingredients you used to assemble your jars were fresh, meaning they weren’t set to expire any time soon, and your jar is sealed tightly, they should last for up to 6 months. But with M&M cookies that taste this good, I don’t expect that you’ll wait that long to make them!

What will the recipient need to bake the cookies?

Almost all of the ingredients are included in this jar. However, the cookie mix recipient will need one egg, 4 tablespoons of butter and 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

What size mason jar should you use?

For this particular recipe, you will need to use a pint size glass jar. I have seen a ton of quart size cookie mix instructions floating around the internet.

While these are great for one off gifts, I wanted to create a recipe for a pint size jar, which is a bit smaller than the quart so that they would be better suited for making multiples.

Whether you need a favor for a holiday party, or want to make a bunch to give out as gifts to a large group of friends, family members, co-workers etc, these pint size jars would in my opinion, be a better size.

How many cookies will this recipe make?

This recipe will make about 8-10 delicious M&M cookies!

Supplies needed to put together one cookie mix in a jar:

  • Pint size glass jar
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup red and green M&Ms
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Ribbon, string or twine
  • Scissors

I would definitely recommend washing out your jar with soap and water prior to filling it with ingredients. Just make sure to dry the inside very well or the flour and sugar will end up sticking to the sides.

Directions to put together one M&M Christmas cookie in a jar kit:

For the first layer, combine 3/4 cup of flour, 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a large mixing bowl.

Pour the mixture into the jar and pat the bottom of the jar to ensure the layer is as level as possible.

Next, measure out 1/4 cup packed brown sugar and add it to the jar.

For the third layer, add in 1/3 cup of granulated sugar.

Finally, pour in 1/2 cup of red and green M&Ms and screw back on the lid tightly.

Cut off a piece of ribbon and tie it around the jar lid, leaving a bit hanging off to tie on the tag. I used thin red ribbon I picked up from my local craft store. Feel free to use any type of ribbon, string or twine that you would like!

Download the free printable recipe tags from the link at the bottom of this post. The tags are designed to print on an 8.5×11 inch piece of paper.

I wanted to go for a more rustic look so I printed out the labels on kraft paper. However, you can also print on white cardstock, or any other type of paper that you would like.

8 tags will print per page and when trimmed will measure approximately 2×3 inches. This is the paper cutter that I am currently using on all of my projects and I can definitely recommend it!

Once your tags are cut out, punch a hole in the top of each tag and tie onto the jar.
