PEAKY BLINDERS season 5 ended with the dramatic death of one of its major characters as Aberama Gold was stabbed to death. But why did actor Aidan Gillen decide to leave the BBC series?

Peaky Blindersseason five ended in a dramatic way for series regular Aberama Gold (played by Aidan Gillen) after he was brutally killed off in a showdown at Oswald Mosley's (Sam Claflin) rally in Birmingham. But why did the much-loved actor leave the show just before his character became a fully-fledged member of the Shelby family?

Why did Aberama Gold star Aidan Gillen leave Peaky Blinders?
Aberama Gold was first introduced in the fourth series of Peaky Blinders when he made an alliance with Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy).
The Birmingham gangster consulted the hit-man when Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody) came to town with a new vendetta.
Hiring Aberama to help kill him, the pair also entered an alliance to support his son Bonnie Gold (Jack Rowan) who was a boxer.
Over the course of his two seasons on the show, the character grew closer to Polly Gray (Helen McCrory) who he proposed to in season five.

However, in the finale Aberama was stabbed to death during Oswald Mosley’s (Sam Claflin) rally.
This happened while the gangster was waiting in the wings ready to kill Jimmy McCavern (Brian Gleeson) as revenge for his son Bonnie’s death.
However, Tommy was betrayed before he could complete his plan to assassinate Mosley.
The episode ended before viewers could find out who was responsible for the horrific killing, but it is sure to play a big part in the next series.

There is also likely to be some repercussions for Polly who was planning to marry Aberama in the next few weeks.
The actor has not revealed the reason he decided to leave Peaky Blinders, but it seems creator Steven Knight had decided his role had to come to an end.
The actor spoke about appearing on the show earlier this year to The Sun Online when he finished filming the fifth outing.
He said: "We have just finished shooting season five, which I have been loving... There's more 'kind of, sort of' villainy.
"I see that character as a romantic gentleman, gypsy hitman."

This is not the first brutal death scene actor Gillen has acted on screen as he was also killed off from his role as Littlefinger in Game of Thrones.
Viewers will next be able to see the Irish actor in a number of upcoming projects.
This includes the second season of Project Blue Book in which the actor plays Dr J Allen Hynek.
He will also be playing James Joyce in the upcoming film James and Lucia as well as Walter Dore in Magic.

He is also reportedly signed on to play Alec Leamas in The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, which is a new adaptation of the John le Carré novel.
The next series of Peaky Blinders has reportedly already been written with production and filming slated to take place next year.
The BBC has also announced that season four director Anthony Byrne will be returning to direct the next outing.
Peaky Blinders seasons 1-5 are currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
