If you are wanting an easy way to make sticky rice, this pressure cooker sticky rice can be made with your Instant Pot right at home. You can get close to the taste that's typically used with a bamboo steamer.

For those that don't want to buy a separate bamboo steamer just to make sticky rice, I'm sharing with you how to use your pressure cooker to make homemade sticky rice at home.

The authentic version of sticky rice can be found here, but this is a cheater way to make sticky rice when you want to shave off a few hours of soaking time.

Sticky rice is common in Southeast Asian cooking, and is absolutely delicious. It's often used in mango sticky rice as the base for this delicious dessert. In addition, it is often paired with larb, a Lao minced meat that is flavorful and delicious.

Why Use the Instant Pot for Sticky Rice

Often, sticky rice requires overnight soaking in order for the rice grains to absorb the rice. However, with the Instant Pot, you can reduce the soaking period so that you can have it for your next meal instead of the next day.

Using an electric pressure cooker like the Instant Pot will allow you to make sticky rice so that it still maintains that gooey, sticky rice that it's known for.

Cooking any type of rice in a pressure cooker can be tricky. There are a lot of variations that can result in not so great rice, including your location's altitude, water hardness, and the age of your rice.

Sticky rice is known as Thai sweet rice as well as glutinous rice. Before it is cooked, the rice grains are a deep, rich white color depth.

The recipe to perfect sticky rice in a pressure cooker is the ratio of water and rice as well as how long the sticky rice is cooked for.

When cooked in a pressure cooker, there will be a bowl inside of the pressure cooker. Inside the pressure cooker safe bowl, there will be a rice and water mixture. There should be ⅔ cup of water for every 1 cup of glutinous rice. Surrounding the bowl should be 1 cup of water that allows the water vapors to steam the rice.

The Best Instant Pot Sticky Rice Setting

For Thai sticky rice, the Instant Pot should be set to high pressure for 12 minutes with natural release for another 12 minutes.

Can you make authentic sticky rice with a pressure cooker?

You can make authentic sticky rice with a pressure cooker. However, I still wholeheartedly recommend making it with a bamboo steamer using this authentic sticky rice recipe.

Using a pressure cooker, the sticky rice will be a little softer than that of using a bamboo steamer.

Do you need to soak the sticky rice if you are using a pressure cooker?

If you are using.a pressure cooker to make the sticky rice, you will not be required to soak rice before hand. This saves you a ton of time!

Can I use jasmine rice to make this?

No, jasmine rice is not the same as glutinous rice. Glutinous rice is what is used to make Thai sticky rice.

  1. Rinse the glutinous rice until the water runs clear.
  2. Add 1 cup of glutinous rice and ⅔ cup of cold water in a stainless steel bowl.
  3. Add the stainless steel bowl on top on top of a steamer.
  4. Add 1 cup of water into the bottom of the pressure cooker.
  5. Close the pressure cooker lid and seal the venting knob.
  6. Set the pressure cooker to high pressure for 12 minutes.
  7. Allow the pressure cooker to natural release.
  8. Open lid carefully, fluff the rice and serve!
