Apollo Creed. Now, if you are into sports movies — particularly boxing ones — that name will be very familiar to you. The main antagonist in Sylvester Stallone's Rocky films I and II, Apollo Creed made up one-half of the most dramatic fictional sporting rivalries in the world. At the start of the series, Apollo Creed is the undisputed champion of the world, who challenges local tough guy, Rocky Balboa, to a fight with his world titles on the line.

At this point, you’re probably aware of what happens, Balboa tries to overcome the odds, has many iconic training montages, and eventually gets beaten by Creed, but takes away a personal victory by going the distance.

Rocky does eventually defeat Creed in the sequel, snatching a dramatic victory as both fighters hit the canvas tired and bruised, Creed is unable to pull himself up and is counted out. With fleeting appearances in Rocky III, creed comes out of retirement in Rocky IV and what can only be taken as a patriotic attempt at defeating the Soviet Union during the Cold War era, is killed in the ring by Soviet fighter Ivan Drago.

This ended Creed’s boxing legacy — at least until 2015.

What Is the Plot of Creed?

Creed is a film that ostensibly continues Apollo’s legacy, this time the fighting has been taken up by his separated son, Adonis ‘Donnie’ Johnson. Adonis didn’t know his father as he was the product of an extramarital affair which influenced his attitude towards Apollo. Although Creed’s son, Adonis was very much boxing for himself.

After finding himself in a bit of bother in a youth detention center, Adonis is taken in by Mary Anne, his father’s wife. Donnie goes on a journey after quitting his job to focus on becoming a professional boxer. Since Mary Anne had lost her husband fighting on the canvas, she was understandably concerned, but Adonis wasn’t taking no for an answer.

After being shunned by an elite boxing gym, Donnie goes on a journey to try and find his father’s old rival and friend, Rocky Balboa, in the hopes he will agree to become his boxing coach. We don’t want to give too much away, so we’re not going to tell you if he’s successful or not.

The movie follows Donnie on his journey of becoming a professional boxer, and similarly to the Rocky films, Creed focuses on the importance of continuing through struggle, to keep hitting back, and not letting anything get in your way.

Who Is In the Cast?

Protagonist, Adonis ‘Donnie’ Johnson is portrayed onscreen by Michael B. Jordan, best known for his role as Oscar Grant III in Fruitvale Station, a biographical drama based around the events that lead to the death of Oscar Grant at the hands of police officers at Fruitvale District Station in Oakland.

Jordan is joined by Tessa Thompson who plays the character, Bianca. A singer-songwriter with a hearing impairment, Bianca becomes Donnie’s love interest throughout the movie.

As expected, Sylvester Stallone is back on the silver screen as Rocky Balboa who has played the Italian Stallion in 8 different feature-length films.

An interesting appearance from British professional boxer, Tony Bellew, stars as ‘Pretty’ Ricky Conlan who narrowly beats Donnie in his last professional fight before being incarcerated for illegal firearms possession.
